What Is New York Form IT-201?
New York Form IT-201 is the full-year resident income tax return used by New York State residents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form IT-201 is to calculate how much income tax you owe New York State (NYS), New York City (NYC), Yonkers, and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax if they apply. Nonresidents and part-year residents generally use New York Form IT-203 instead.

Who Must File New York Form IT-201?
You must file a New York State tax return if you were required to file a federal income tax return. There is also an income test for those who were not required to file a federal income tax return. For most full-year residents, you must file a New York State return if your federal adjusted gross income plus New York additions is more than $4,000. If you are Single and can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's federal return, the amount is lower at $3,100.
Even if your income is below the amount specified, you may still want to file a New York tax return. For example, you may receive a refund for New York State, New York City, or Yonkers income tax withheld from your pay or unemployment insurance benefit payments. You may also be eligible to claim refundable or carryover credits, such as the New York State Earned Income Credit (EIC), Empire State child credit, and child and dependent care credit.
