What Is Illinois Form IL-1040?

Illinois Form IL-1040 is the individual income tax return used by full-year residents, part-year residents, and nonresidents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form IL-1040 is to calculate how much income tax you owe the state of Illinois. Part-year residents and nonresidents generally use Form IL-1040 with Schedule NR to calculate Illinois tax.

Illinois does not publish a separate IL-1040EZ or short-form individual income tax return. Read the General Information section of the IL-1040 instructions book to help determine if you should file as a full-year resident, part-year resident, or nonresident for tax year 2025.

Who Must File Illinois Form IL-1040?

You must file an Illinois tax return if you were required to file a federal income tax return. There is also an income test for those who were not required to file a federal income tax return. You must file an Illinois tax return if your Illinois base income on Line 9 is greater than your Illinois exemption allowance on Line 10. For tax year 2025, Single residents under the age of 65 generally must file if their income is more than $2,850. Married residents under the age of 65 with no dependents generally must file if their income is more than $5,700.

Even if your Illinois base income is below the amount specified for your total exemption allowance, you may still want to file an Illinois tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your Illinois W-2, for example. You may also be eligible for the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, Property Tax Credit, K-12 Education Expense Credit, Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit, and other Illinois credits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions about printing, mailing, documenting, and filing Illinois Form IL-1040. These FAQ focus on practical details from the official form and instructions.

When is Form IL-1040 due?

For tax year 2025, Form IL-1040 is generally due April 15, 2026. Illinois grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file, but the extension does not give you more time to pay. If you owe tax, review the extension rules in the Illinois Form IL-1040 instructions and pay by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

Should I use a pencil or pen on Form IL-1040?

The 2025 Illinois Form IL-1040 and instructions do not specify pencil, pen, or ink color. If you complete a paper return by hand, use dark ink, write clearly, and follow the printed boxes and line instructions on the form.

Do I include Forms W-2 and 1099 with my IL-1040 form?

Yes, if you claim Illinois income tax withheld. Attach Schedule IL-WIT and all Forms W-2 and 1099 that show Illinois income and withholding. The front of Form IL-1040 says to staple W-2 and 1099 forms in the space provided.

Do I include my federal return with Form IL-1040?

Include your federal return only when the Illinois instructions require it. For example, if you subtract federally taxed Social Security benefits or qualified retirement income on Line 5, attach federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Page 1, Schedule 1, and any W-2 and 1099 forms needed to support the subtraction. Include other federal forms or schedules when required by the Illinois instructions.

Can I amend Form IL-1040?

Yes. Do not file another Form IL-1040 to correct a previously filed Illinois return. Use Form IL-1040-X if you discover an error after filing, or if a final federal change affects your Illinois income, additions, subtractions, exemptions, or credits. Include any required schedules or supporting forms with Form IL-1040-X.

How long should I keep my Illinois tax records?

Keep a copy of your Illinois return and the records used to prepare it. Illinois law generally gives the Department of Revenue 3 years after a return is filed to issue a notice of deficiency, with exceptions. The IRS generally says to keep records that support income, deductions, and credits for at least 3 years, and longer in some situations. Consider keeping a paper or digital copy of your filed tax returns longer than the supporting documents.
