About Virginia Schedule A

Virginia Schedule A is used to calculate Virginia itemized deductions. Taxpayers who claim itemized deductions on their federal income tax return must also itemize on their Virginia return and attach the completed schedule.

The first page covers medical and dental expenses, taxes, interest, charitable gifts, casualty and theft losses, and other itemized deductions. The second page contains the Conformity Worksheet and Limited Itemized Deduction Worksheet used when the corresponding instructions apply.

Enter the amount from Schedule A, Line 19, on Form 760, Form 760PY, or Form 763 as directed by the applicable return instructions. Part-year residents generally include only deductions for expenses paid while they were Virginia residents. Use the separate Schedule A instructions to help you complete the form.

Important for tax year 2025: Virginia issued updated guidance for taxpayers affected by the state and local tax deduction cap. Review the official Schedule A update before completing Line 5a, particularly if you claim the general sales tax deduction or are subject to the limited itemized deduction calculation.
