IRS Extended Filing Deadline Is October 15 for 2025 Tax Returns
The six-month filing extension ends October 15, 2026. The IRS says those who miss it should still file, even if they cannot pay the full balance.
Most taxpayers with a valid extension for their 2025 federal income tax return must file by Thursday, October 15, 2026. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) confirmed that date for the regular six-month extension. This deadline concerns 2025 income reported on a return filed in 2026.
With the deadline one day away, taxpayers should finish and submit their returns even if they cannot pay the full balance. Missing the deadline does not remove the obligation to file.
The Extension Gave More Time to File, Not to Pay
For most taxpayers, any unpaid 2025 federal income tax was due April 15, 2026. A filing extension did not move that payment date to October. Interest and applicable late-payment penalties can accrue on an unpaid balance even while the filing extension remains valid.
Taxpayers can file electronically or mail a paper return. For a mailed return to be timely, the envelope must be properly addressed, have sufficient postage, and be postmarked by the deadline. IRS Free File remains available through October 15 for taxpayers who qualify to use its guided preparation software.
If You Miss October 15, File as Soon as Possible
The IRS guidance on filing past-due tax returns tells taxpayers to file all required returns, whether or not they can pay in full. Do not wait until the next filing season to address an overdue 2025 return. Taxpayers without a valid extension or other relief generally were already required to file by April 15.
If you owe tax, file promptly and pay as much as you can to limit further charges. You may be eligible for an IRS payment plan for the remaining balance. A payment arrangement addresses the debt, but does not replace filing the return.
If you are due a federal income tax refund, the IRS generally does not charge a penalty for filing the return late. That does not mean you should put it off indefinitely. Refund claims have time limits, and waiting too long can mean losing the refund.
Check Whether a Different Deadline Applies
Qualifying disaster relief or combat-zone service can provide additional time. Check the IRS disaster relief notices for the covered locations, affected returns, and applicable deadlines. October 15 is the regular extended filing date, not a universal deadline for every taxpayer.
